Beam Balance – Description and Working Principle

A Beam Balance is a classical mechanical weighing instrument used to measure mass by comparing an unknown mass with known standard weights. It operates on the principle of moments (torque equilibrium). When equal masses are placed on both sides of the beam, the beam remains horizontal, indicating balance.

1. Beam – A horizontal lever pivoted at the center.

2. Fulcrum / Knife Edge – Central pivot point enabling free movement.

3. Pans – Two plates suspended from both ends for placing objects and weights.

4. Pointer – Indicates whether the beam is balanced.

5. Standard Weights – Known masses used for comparison.

Working Principle

The beam balance follows the principle:

$W_1{d}_1=W_2{d}_2$

Where:

• $W_1$ and $W_2$ are weights,

• $d_1$ and $d_2$ are distances from the fulcrum.

When both torques become equal, the beam becomes horizontal.
